Vanda lamellata var. boxallii

There are several varieties in the lamellata species, I want to have them all of course. This is my first lamellata.
The flowers are old and started to wilt.



I like contrasting colors of blooms a lot.

Vanda coerulea

The blue vanda species - Vanda coerulea. It doesn't need to grow huge to flower, my plant is blooming sized:



It does need however to grow some new roots.

Vanda coerulea is relatively slow growing species and might put out just one set of new leaves through the season.

Tolerant of colder temps it can withstand down to 5-10 C - just goes dormant and stops the growing.

I read somewhere that it needs temperature drops to induce blooms and hope to achieve it by placing plant on the windowsil closer to window glass during freezing winter times.
We shall see if it works.

Vanda insignis

Mature plant of Vanda insignis potted into sphagnum moss...




No, don't worry, it is not sphagnum moss all the way to the bottom.
I actually found this method of potting vandas here.
I thought it would work for me because while my seedlings in small pots are fine with chc - this vanda has pretty wide spread roots that require large pot. Chc in that pot would probably dry forever, so I did as described in the post I mentioned above.

Curled the roots into pot and placed bunch of small net plastic pots in between:



Put a layer of sphagnum moss to top it up:



Now I need to make sure it dries up in about 3 to 4 days, that's how often I water my other vandas in chc and they like it.

Vanda tricolor

A very small seedling of vanda tricolor - since my main interest is still vanda species.




I already have a seedling of Vanda suavis which is actually Vanda tricolor var. suavis. This one is supposed to be different, although I will not know for sure another 5 years at least.

If you want to train your patience - buy a small seedling of vanda.

Vanda bensonii

Cutting of Vanda bensonii got some nice new roots going in the basket with coconut husk chips. Because I was going to grow it in a vase, I decided to move her there now before roots grow wide to the sides and would need to be pushed and curled to fit. Now they can be nicely shaped by the vase.

Vanda testacea

Apparently not all vandas like it in the glass vase. After having Vanda testacea bare rooted I thought it was too dry for her and put it into glass bowl where its roots could curl up nicely and watered it together with other vase vandas by filling vase with water every day. After couple months it lost several bottom leaves on both growths because they rotted at the base.
I was so scared that I will loose the plant because of crown rot, so I moved it to the wide clay pot without any media.



Will see how it goes there, hopefully it will have chance to dry out better.
