Phalaenopsis fasciata 'Shaffers'

Multiple old spikes on fasciata 'Shaffers' started to look yellowish and rough, so I decided to cut them off and repot the plant.
Two new spikes that I discovered last winter turned into basal keikis, so cutting off the old spikes might also help the plant to grow the keikis faster.
Unpotted it showed some new roots grown:

Potted into fresh moss:

I think it might look spectacular with three crowns when they all will be ready to bloom...

Phalaenopsis fasciata 'Shaffers'

Yesterday I discovered a new spike start on Phalaenopsis fasciata 'Shaffers'. It is quite small still but definitely looks like a spike, not root, right?

This plant just bloomed in September and already has bunch of spikes that span into three different directions making it very hard to find suitable space for it, so I don't know what is the point in growing yet one more, but it probably knows the reason.

I like fasciata flowers with their wild striped patterns. Looking forward to more blooms...

Phalaenopsis fasciata 'Shaffers' CCM/AOS blooms

Last time it bloomed in December 2011 and blasted all buds except one. This year Phal. fasciata 'Shaffers' CCM/AOS has three buds now, one on each spike, and one opened today:

Here is how the plant looks now:

Two other buds are a bit behind in development, but blooms last pretty long on this phal, so I think there will be a moment when all flowers will be opened.
I like the flowers, only wish they were fragrant too.

Phalaenopsis fasciata 'Shaffers'

I got so busy with new phals, that totally forgot about my Phal. fasciata 'Shaffers' that lives here since last fall.
Now it activated three spikes and grows three buds:

Last time it flowered in December, so now is probably the time to start blooming again. This guy is a known bud blaster and last time I only got one flower.
Now I keep him in a humidity tray and that should help to keep all buds until opening, hopefully.

Phalaenopsis fasciata 'Shaffers'

After one successful flowering my Phal. fasciata 'Shaffers' tried to produce couple more buds on different spikes, but they all wilted not developed, I guess, because of too low humidity for it.
Finally it probably thought to itself: "Forget it!" and decided to turn its energy somewhere else.
So, now it is getting a new leaf:

And a new root on the other side:

I hope when the summer comes (and our summers are usually pretty hot and humid), it will try to bud again and maybe succeed...

Repotting phals

These two phalaenopsis plants were potted into clay pots with sphagnum moss.
The pots were about 4 inch and I noticed that moss stayed wet too long. Both still have nice healthy roots at the moment. I decided to move them into bark mix and clear plastic pots so I could monitor the roots better. Here they are in the new pots.

Phalaenopsis fasciata 'Shaffers' bloom

Well, my Phalaenopsis fasciata finally bloomed after several blasted buds, but there is a slight damage on the petals. I don't know, maybe it is a water damage from when I was misting the plant.
It is a bit disappointing, I waited for the flower and it isn't perfect, but on the happy note - there are two more buds forming on the other spikes. I will make sure not to mist them and hope they will look better.

I was making pictures of the bloom as it was developing. Here they are:

Phal. fasciata another update

My Phalaenopsis fasciata bud got much bigger and now I can see the markings showing through on the petals.

I think there is also another bud is starting to grow on the other spike! Exciting!!!

Phalaenopsis fasciata bud update

Is the bud getting bigger or is it just my wishful thinking? Well, it is still alive, and doesn't shrivel, and that's what matters.
Still keep my fingers crossed and also try to keep humidity around its mossy humidity tray.
I hope I didn't jinx my bud by posting the progress :).

Phal fasciata buds and blasts

After THREE!!! blasted buds on different spikes I took a hint that maybe my Phal. fasciata doesn't like it's location: shelf in our home office, light on the bright side, air on the drier side.
So I decided to place it into more humid environment creating this "humidity tray" that it shares with two other phals, twins draculas and small haraella retrocalla on the back. There is moss around which I am trying to keep moist by misting:

The tray sits on the ledge in the kitchen and humidity meter showed 67%, temps are between 21C at night to 25C during the day when it is sunny, which should be OK. There is another bud forming, I will be watching it closely, if it will blast too, I am clueless...
Here is the close up of the bud:

Bad news and good news

Bad news - the first bud on phalaenopsis fasciata totally blasted. I don't know why. Too dry environment in the house?

Good news - two new buds on the other spikes are still pretty much alive and growing, although I don't know for how long. I am not posting anymore buds until they actually flower...

More buds on phal. fasciata

Excited about my first bud on recent purchase - Phalaenopsis fasciata 'Shaffers' I almost missed two more buds forming on the other two spikes. They are on the left side of the picture, I tried to focus on them, so the first bud on the right came out kind of blurry...

I wonder how long is it before they open. The first bud seems to stay the same (or I just look at it way too often).

Phal fasciata bud

About two weeks ago I got Phalaenopsis fasciata 'Shaffers'. There were four spikes but no visible buds. Now there is definite growth on one of the spikes that looks like tiny bud.

Click here to compare with arrival picture.
I hope there will be flower soon!

Phalaenopsis fasciata 'Shaffers'

Potted into plastic pot with fresh sphagnum moss after its bareroot arrival, Phal fasciata 'Shaffers' looks happy. There are four spikes and one of them looks like it will even branch. Hopefully I will keep it alive in sphagnum moss...
