Dendrobium

This no id dendrobium came last year from the discount shelf of home renovation store. It didn't have flowers, neither had it roots.
I have used sphag-and-bag method and it grew the new canes, they are potted together and you can still see the pieces of old canes:

Naturally when I saw one of the new canes maturing, I started to wait for a spike.
Well, there is still no spike, but today I have noticed a new growth appearing from the smallest cane.
I wonder why?

  1. That new growth might still turn out to be a root. I'm not sure if it's a /nobile/ type dendrobium (which will flower on the cane) or one of the other types of dendrobium that throw a spike out the top of the plant - it looks a bit like the latter to me, but I'm not certain! My NOID dendrobium of that sort is currently spiking, and has white phalaenopsis-style blooms with a red lip; it's only label said Den. mini white.
